Article on Racism

Here's a great article I read today in the American Chronicle on racism in American politics:

Read here.

Looks like it's going to be a long and challenging campaign season for Obama.

Going Blank

....For some reason, my mind is going blank. I can't think of anything I want to write about!!! And it doesn't help that this semester is turning out to be even worse than last semester and even more stressful, leaving me little time to blog in the first place. But I just wanted to let y'all know that I"m still alive, surviving, and I'll be back soon with something more interesting to read about, hopefully!

Until then, come by and say hello, seems like a lot of the visitors here are too shy to say anything. I would love to meet some of our lurkers!

Funny Feedback

Being the bad student I am, I was stalking youtube and found this lovely gem:

Indian professor shows feedback forms to his students.

Now, this is exactly the kinda feedback I'm talking about!!! Too funny:)

My new distraction

Do you ever get so into reading a book ,that you forget to do anything else? You simply don't want to do anything else??

I'm currently reading Maximum City: Bombay Lost and Found and I can't put it down!!! It's so damn addicting. All the underworld stories and personal experiences are extremely riveting. I'm only about half way into the book, but I'm really liking it so far. Have any of you read it? If not, I urge you to do so. Having only been to certain parts of Bombay on my family trips, I never saw nor experienced the many sides of this city so clearly written about in this book. It makes me want to take a trip back to Bombay now, just to see and feel and hear all the stuff that I apparently missed out or was completely ignorant of in my previous trips.

If nothing else, this book is turning out to be a Maximum (and a welcome) distraction indeed!

We are all Phenomenal Women

That is, if you're a woman ;)
I just read this wonderful poem by Maya Angelou. Simply Phenomenal!

PHENOMENAL WOMAN
by Maya Angelou

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies
I'm not cute or built to suit a model's fashion size
But when
I start to tell them
They think I'm telling lies.
I say
It's in the reach of my arms
The span of my hips
The stride of my steps
The curl of my lips.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally
Phenomenal woman
That's me.

I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please
And to a man
The fellows stand or
Fall down on their knees
Then they swarm around me
A hive of honey bees.
I say
It's the fire in my eyes
And the flash of my teeth
The swing of my waist
And the joy in my feet.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally
Phenomenal woman
That's me.

Men themselves have wondered
What they see in me
They try so much
But they can't touch
My inner mystery.
When I try to show them
They say they still can't see.
I say
It's in the arch of my back
The sun of my smile
The ride of my breasts
The grace of my style.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally
Phenomenal woman
That's me.

Now you understand
Just why my head's not bowed
I don't shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud
When you see me passing
It ought to make you proud.
I say
It's in the click of my heels
The bend of my hair
The palm of my hand
The need for my care.
'Cause I'm a woman
Phenomenally
Phenomenal woman
That's me.

A brief Golden Globe Re-Cap

Hey All,

Ok so I know most of you are probably reading this thinking, why, Why, WHY Payal are you watching a stupid award show! But, truthfully, I'm kinda addicted to these awards shows and all that comes with it: the fashion, seeing my favorite actors and actresses, the gossip, the funny speeches (depending on whose it is), and the wonderful escape it provides me from my boring life!

So, here's my little recap of the Golden Globes last night. Make of it what you will.

Speeches: I LOVED the speeches by Borat, House, and Betty (using their character names) HATED: Tom Hank's introduction, Warren Beatty's speech(which went on FOREVER), and Jaime Foxx's annoying banter before introducing his movie.

Fashion: I surprisingly really liked Jennifer Lopez's dress. Helen Mirren looked regal. Rachel Weiz and Kate Winslet looked elegant. America just looked gorgeous!

Special shout-outs to America from Ugly Betty. Loved what she said about girls being more what they wished for and I love her character. Watch the show, it's great!

To Sendhil Ramamurthy for being on tv and announcing the award that was then presented Hugh Laurie! A truly fine moment! :)

To Sascha Cohen for one of the funniest speeches ever!! I was almost crying:)

Highs and Lows

Today was the first day back for 2nd semester and with an added bonus of starting classes at freakin' 8 am in the morning (seriously, this should be a crime. I mean some of us, are just NOT morning people!!!) So, needless to say, I wasn't exactly all that thrilled to get up today morning, especially after my little Golden Globes party (more on that in another post) last night. But then, when I woke up today, at the crack of dawn and with darkness all around me, I opened the blinds to my window and for the first time this winter I saw REAL snow! The first time all winter!!! I love seeing the first snowfall of winter, it's so pure and peaceful and beautiful. Excited after seeing my pretty white snow, I thought, hey today won't be so bad after all. I mean I even had some time left to drink some coffee before class!

But all good things must come to an end and so my initial high slowly came crashing down as I realized how much of a pain it is walk outside while it's snowing during the early morning in the midst of all the traffic and icy sidewalks. And then, the day got even worse, as I just had to run into my fellow "brown brotha from the hood" as I was walking up the stairs almost out of breath (damn you heels!).

And finally, to put the icing on top my ugly morning Tuesday cake, I just found out that a dear friend that I made last semester, a truly gem of a person, kind, caring, so smart and studious she made the rest of us look bad, so elegant and proper that I told her to ditch all this school nonsense and become a famous ballerina dancer, decided that graduate school was not where her interests lie after all. She would no longer be sitting next to me and we would no longer share each other's company during our loooong classes. Sigh. I'm going to miss her. But you know, she's the sort of person that will be successful in whatever she does and I hope she finds her true calling soon. She's out to search for her dreams and I hope she grabs ahold of it soon.
I wish I had grabbed a few sparkly snowflakes in dark, early morning today too, before it soon all melted away in the warm sun of a Tuesday afternoon.
