An Indian Nutcracker

Via Angry Asian Man, I just read about this wonderful new peformance of the Nutcracker that's happening in Boston.

Read An Indian Nutcracker.

The teacher is Indian but it seems that the students who are performing it are not. Regardless, I think it's amazing that she's put together such a performance incorporating various Indian dances and movements including Bharata Natyam. More importantly, she's teaching traditional movements and giving her students a glimpse into another culture.

As someone who has a wondeful memory of the first time that she saw The Nutcracker being performed in the city on a class field trip and is a Bharata Natyam dancer, I would just like to say that I think it's great that Ms. Sirinivasan has created this performance by bringing together classical Indian dance and the main idea behind the famous Nutcracker story. She's altered the story a bit, obviously, but she has orginal video scenery and an original musical composition for the performance!

It's nice to see college dance departments including various dances from around the world into their curriculum. Indeed dance is universal!
Very, very cool.
